Homework is assigned daily to practice previously learned skills, to prepare for new material, and to apply knowledge independently.  Daily homework includes written homework, taking notes on textual material, memorization, and studying for quizzes and tests.  Time should be scheduled for completion of longer projects for punctual completion as well.

In alignment with the ADLA Finland Cohort Guidelines, homework is not assigned on the weekend.  To further facilitate this, quizzes and tests are not given on Mondays.  Please keep in mind that independent reading is not a part of homework.

Time allotments for homework are as follows:

PS2+ - PS3+                         No homework; occasional family activity

            Grades TK – 1                      Approximately 10 minutes

            Grades 2 – 3                         Approximately 20 – 30 minutes

            Grades 4 – 5                         Approximately 30 – 50 minutes

            Grades 6 – 8                         Approximately 50 – 80 minutes

Homework also teaches students time-management skills.  Each student receives a Good News Planner at the beginning of each year.  The planner allows students to list assignments clearly and to schedule long-range assignments with specific short-term deadlines.  It is the responsibility of each child to write his/her assignments.

Parents can take an active role in their child's education by setting homework guidelines.  Parents should review both daily and long-term assignments with their child.  To encourage good study habits, they should set up a study area to complete homework.  The area should be free of distractions, have the necessary supplies, and be well-lit.  A specific time should be designated for studying and completing assignments.

Should a child be ill and unable to complete assignments, parents should write a note explaining the situation.  Such excuses should be an exception and not a habitual event.  If a student consistently demonstrates difficulty with assignments, it may be beneficial to contact the teacher.
