Textbook/Resource Selection and Replacement

Each school regularly reviews textbooks and resources to ensure they are adequate resources to help teachers and students meet the school-developed, standards-based curriculum. Each school should consider budgetary constraints of both the school and the students' families. Selected textbooks must also be aligned with overall Catholic philosophy.

Use of Media

With principal approval, a teacher may select age-appropriate videos and films to enrich the curriculum, in conformity with the rules on Fair Use see: Screening Films, Videos, Documentaries, and Other Recorded Materials in Schools but Not for Parish Religious Education Programs.

Before class use, a teacher should preview all videos and films in their entirety.

The teacher and/or principal should view any unrated material to confirm it is relevant to the curriculum and appropriate for the students' age and maturity level.

Parental Approval

Using the film ratings from the Motion Picture Association of America, the conditions for classroom viewing are as follows:

FILM RATING CONDITIONS FOR CLASSROOM VIEWING
GNeeds teacher review for appropriateness
PGNeeds approval from teacher, principal, and parents/guardians
PG-13Needs approval from teacher, principal, and parents/guardians
RMay not be shown
NC-17May not be shown

See the The V-Chip: Options to Restrict What Your Children Watch on TV from the Federal Communications Commission.

When the principal or teacher is aware that supplementary material might be considered controversial, parents/guardians should be offered the opportunity to preview the materials and approval from parents/guardians is required.

If a student is uncomfortable viewing the material presented or the parents/guardians object to their child viewing the material, the teacher should provide an alternative assignment to the student.
