DRESS CODE/UNIFORMS
SPBS uniforms must be worn starting the first day of school, and they may only be manufactured by School Uniforms by Tommy Hilfiger. New and used uniforms can be purchased at the school on "Uniform Sale Days" (See “Uniform Requirements" at the back of this Parent/Student Handbook for specific uniform pieces that may be worn) or online (www.globalschoolwear.com). Volunteer SPBS parents will also hold Used Uniform Sales throughout the year.
The following company supplies all SPBS school uniforms:

Tommy Hilfiger provides the daily SPBS uniform components and P.E. uniforms.
General SPBS Student Dress Code Requirements:
Students should be neatly dressed and well-groomed at all times. Uniforms should fit properly and be in good repair with no rips, holes, or stains. Girls' plaid skirts/jumpers must be an appropriate length – approximately 3-4" above the knee at a maximum. Boys' white, gray, or “rugby-style" red/navy logo polo shirts may be no more than 6" below the waist when not tucked-in, and all boys' shirts must all have the SPBS logo on the front.
All outerwear worn to school must be the RED (Grades K-5) jackets/sweatshirts or NAVY BLUE (Grades 6-8) sweatshirts/sweaters purchased only through Global Schoolwear – all bearing the SPBS logo. All sweatshirts. 7th & 8th Grade students only may also wear school-issued Varsity Jackets. No scarves or mittens may be worn during cold weather. Girls may wear white or navy blue tights with feet only: no leggings.
Hair color is to be a natural color of the student and the cut/style should be neat, clean, and well groomed: no extreme or drastic haircuts or styles that create a distraction are allowed at any time, including shaving any designs into the hair. Hair bows and head bands for girls should coordinate with the school's colors of red, navy and/or white and should not be so large as to cause a “distraction". Boys' haircuts must allow the boys' hair at all times to be: off the face, above the eyebrows, neatly trimmed around the neck above the collar, and is to be trimmed above the ears. Junior High boys need to be completely clean-shaven with no facial hair at any time. Parents please help your children adhere to these rules by providing haircuts for boys on a regular basis as needed, and checking to be sure your older son is clean-shaven every day.
Jewelry worn at school is limited to a watch for boys, and girls may wear a watch and ONLY one small, stud-type earring in each ear; boys are prohibited from wearing earrings. Only watches that do not communicate (send/receive messages) may be worn at school. No hoop or dangling earrings are to be worn to school by the girls, due to safety/liability issues. No body piercing in areas that can be observed is allowed on students, and no tattoos are ever allowed on students enrolled in SPBS. Chains, necklaces, medals, bracelets (including rubber band style or woven “friendship" bracelets), rings, etc. are not permitted to be worn by either boys or girls. This includes religious medals: they are not to be worn to school due to safety/liability reasons. In addition, special keepsake religious medals/necklaces may easily be lost at school, and this can then cause undue distress to the student/family. AN exception is made for religious scapulars, however, those must be removed and kept in their desk/locker whenever the student goes outside of the classroom for P.E. class or to play at breaks for safety reasons.
Make-up is not to be worn to school by girls in Grades K-5. Junior High girls may only wear minimal make-up, as long as it looks natural and is within the boundaries of good taste. No excessive glitter-style make-up or very heavy/dark eyeliner/eye make-up is allowed at school. Make-up is never to be applied at school, and brushes/combs are NEVER to be shared among students, due to health concerns. Make-up for the junior high girls is a privilege, and may be taken away on an individual or group basis if the school guidelines are not followed.
Girls in Grades K-5 may wear only clear or pale pink or peach nail polish at school. As a privilegeJunior High Girls (Grades 6-8) are allowed to wear any colored nail polish. No “acrylic" nails, nail “tips/extensions", designs, or “dipped" nails are allowed in any grade.
Students' shoes are to be predominantly solid white, black, grey, or navy blue tennis/sport style shoes. Due to safety issues, students may never wear boots, sandals, “Mary Jane" style leather shoes, or Lug soles, patterned (such as checkered) shoes, or leather soles to school – even on “Spirit Days" and “casual dress" days. All shoes must be worn and fit snugly with Velcro or shoelaces, so that they do not fly off the student's foot during play and/or sport activities. Students are not to wear shoes to school with soles that light-up, display cartoon characters or drawings. No heels or soles higher than 2" are allowed on students' shoes for safety reasons. Shoelaces must coordinate with the shoe color: no brightly colored or fluorescent shoelaces are allowed. Red and navy shoelaces are allowed, as they are two of our school colors.
Socks must be worn by all students, AND be visible, while at school, and socks must be white for girls and boys in Grades K-5: ONLY Junior High boys may wear white or black socks. Note: Socks may have one small logo on each sock. Girls may wear socks with the SPBS plaid on them, which are purchased from Dennis Uniform Company. No scarves or mittens or knit hats may be worn (even during cold weather). No undergarments or undershirts may be visible through the uniform shirt or be longer than the uniform shirt.
P.E. Uniforms are to be worn to school on scheduled P.E. days for Grades 4-8 instead of the regular uniform. Any student (Grades 4-8) who does not arrive for school dressed in their P.E. uniform on that day will be considered out of uniform and issued an “Out of Uniform" Notice. P.E. Uniform sweatpants with the SPBS logo only may be worn by students only on P.E. days, as needed in cold weather.
No hats are ever allowed at school, due to hygiene reasons. No sunglasses may be worn by students at SPBS during school hours, even on “Casual Dress" days. Boys' belts must fit snugly; not have a long length hanging down after being buckled, and belts may only be dark leather or a plain dark material.
Any interpretation as to attire worn by students to school and/or to school-sponsored events will be subject to the discretion of the administration, and their final decision must be adhered to by the student/family.
“Casual Dress" Days/Spirit Days/Outreach Casual Dress Days/NUT Passes
“Casual Dress" days are privileges and are really considered “out of uniform days". As such, it is expected that students will be dressed appropriately and within the boundaries of Catholic/Christian modesty on these days.
Unacceptable school attire includes, but is not limited to the following items:
“Spaghetti" strap shirts (and/or any shirt where bra straps are visible), crop tops, see-through shirts, very short shorts, ripped, torn, or frayed jeans, visible underwear of any kind, overly tight clothing, or extremely oversized clothing. Straps on shirts for girls must be at least 2-inches wide, and no cut-out shirts. Girls' shorts in all grades should have at least a 4-inch inseam, and go down to their fingertips when their arms are rested at their sides. Leggings may be worn, but only in combination with over-garments (shorts/skirts/dresses/shirts) of appropriate length. No dangling earrings are allowed for safety reasons. Clothing with inappropriate wording or designs, goes against Catholic teachings, or designed to create political divisiveness, are also prohibited. Sunglasses, wigs, and/or hats may not be worn at school, due to California State Health and Safety codes. However, very occasionally on “Spirit Days" an exception may be made to part of these specific criteria. Please check the “Bear Paw" prior to each “Spirit Day" for specific guidelines regarding this section only of the Student Dress Code.
NOTE: Students MUST also wear their regular dress code-compliant school shoes on all “casual dress days". In addition, for some identified special school events (Graduation, Spring Sing, May Crowning, and the Christmas Concert) there will be specific dress code guidelines for students printed in the weekly Principal's newsletter, “The Bear Paw" and distributed to parents of those classes as needed. Parents are expected to provide the requested dress code as requested/required for their children.
“Full Dress Uniform" Days
Every Friday, unless otherwise indicated on the SPBS Calendar, and on other designated days when SPBS attends Mass (e.g. Holy Days of Obligation) and liturgical services in the Church (e.g. Ash Wednesday) all students must come to school in “full dress uniform". This indicates that the boys are to wear School Uniforms by Tommy Hilfiger long pants and white polo, and girls wear SPBS plaid jumpers or skirts/skorts with white blouse or polo. Shorts are not permitted to be worn by students on “Dress Uniform Days". Check the Principal's weekly “Bear Paw" newsletter and on the school website for those designated Full Dress Uniform Days during the school year.
League Game Day Attire
SPBS athletes are to purchase a red polo shirt through School Uniforms by Tommy Hilfiger, which is to be worn on all League game days and Pep Rally days, instead of the regular uniform shirts.SPBS Swim Team members may wear a logo swim team shirt or sweatshirt to school on the Friday before a League Swim Meet. SPBS Athletes must wear the complete school-issued team uniform in order to participate in school-sponsored games, including SPBS logo shorts.
Reminder: School rules and Codes of Conduct for athletes will be strictly enforced while a student is in the SPBS uniform and/or SPBS team uniform, as the wearing of the SPBS uniform clearly identifies the student as being a member of our school community.
Dress Code Notice: Parents please check your child(ren) before they leave for school each day, to prevent our having to call you to bring suitable clothing to school or to pick your child up due to inappropriate clothing. A student's attire is primarily a parenting issue, so we look forward to our parents' strong support and collaboration with SPBS in this area.
Failure to comply with SPBS dress code requirements will result in disciplinary action, including loss of casual dress privileges, referrals, given alternative clothing to wear by the school, or further, more severe actions for repeated or more severe violations. Students with three dress code violations in a trimester will lose Spirit/Outreach Days/Casual Dress privileges for the rest of the trimester. Students with six dress code violations will lose Spirit/Outreach Days/Casual Dress privileges for the remainder of the year.
