MISSED HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK WHILE ABSENT PROTOCOL
The school calendar allows generous amounts of time for families to vacation together and as such, the school discourages additional time taken for trips during the school year. If a family chooses to take their child(ren) out of school, it is the responsibility of the students and parents to make arrangements for class work missed to be completed upon their return to school. No work will be given in advance of the student's absence. Junior High students have quite a few teachers, therefore, please make written notification to all junior high teachers prior to leaving on vacation during school time.
Homework/classwork missed due to a student's illness, including COVID, will be provided upon request by the parent, directly to each teacher. With the new protocols for student return from isolation, SPBS will no longer be offering Distance Learning via Zoom for students who test positive for COVID. Please see section under “Junior High Procedures for Missed Work While Absent" below, for specific Junior High procedures.
Students with fevers or serious symptoms of illness are to be kept at home until they have fully recovered (a minimum of 24 hours without a fever, while not taking any fever-reducing medication). Whenever possible, please do not make appointments during school hours. We understand that Orthodontists only make initial appointments for braces/orthodontia during school hours.
JUNIOR HIGH PROCEDURES FOR MISSED WORK WHILE ABSENT
The SPBS Junior High Team has compiled the following “absent work procedures". Together we hopefully can help our Junior High students, in Grades 6-8, stay on track, in the event of an unplanned and/or a medical absence:
1. In the event of an absence, students should check Google Classroom, as well as speak with each teacher about any missed work while absent.
2. Although classwork may not be posted, students may check their class's Google Classroom page to see their posted homework.
3. If you would like to pick up the absent work prior to the student's return, the parent or their designee may pick up materials with prior notice made to the school office.
4. Please come prepared with the student's locker number and combination, in order to be able to access needed materials from their lockers.
5. All books and materials are to be picked up prior to 3:15 P.M. No students or parents are allowed in the locker area after that time, as the parish program for Religious Education classes uses our classrooms beginning at 3:30 p.m.
6. In order to keep exposure to a minimum, please do not send your sick child in to pick-up work on days they have stayed home due to illness.
7. Since Junior High students have multiple teachers, books and materials may not always be able to be sent to the office or a sibling's classroom.
8. Students will be given time to complete make-up work based on the number of days they are absent.
9. In the event of an extended absence, students should contact the teachers to discuss a make-up schedule, for the missed work, tests, etc.
10. It is the student's responsibility to submit all absent work in a timely manner in order to receive full credit.
11. Projected work is not given out in the event of a planned absence or trip. However, a student may check Google Classroom in order to see what work was completed. It is sometimes difficult to obtain accurate classroom notes when you were not there, and it can be difficult to make-up work after extended absences (or frequent absences). In addition, it is always best to be present in the classroom setting while new material is being presented. Therefore, we strongly suggest that our Junior High families avoid planning trips/vacations during school time. Absences tend to result in lower grades for the students.
12. Please contact the Homeroom teacher if you have any questions regarding these procedures. Our goal is to help keep our students healthy and “on track".
MAKE-UP TESTING
Make-up assessments for grades K-5 will be handled inside the classroom by the lead teacher and the aide. Make-up assessments for grades 6-8 should be conducted during the “X-Block" period, unless otherwise required by the teacher. Students behind on multiple assessments will need to coordinate making them up with their individual teachers.
X-BLOCK
“X Block" for Junior High is an opportunity for students to seek out extra help from their academic teachers, study for upcoming assessments, make-up tests, or get a jump start on their homework. Students have the choice of which classroom to work in, but are required to be working quietly on their academics.
