Technology Policies

Technology has become an important element in education, from teachers presenting lessons to students learning how to utilize it for daily class work, projects and research. St. Jude the Apostle has a long-range technology plan that focuses on increasing the number of devices on campus and on-going maintenance. The plan also includes looking at adding software programs and apps that allow maximum integration of technology into the curriculum, i.e. Edmodo, One-Note, Google docs, and android-based apps for use with tablets.

The Archdiocesan Department of Catholic Schools directs all schools to have in place specific policies regarding the responsible and safe use of the internet, computer equipment and software programs.

This is not a periodic remodel, but a commitment by St. Jude the Apostle School to provide the highest quality technology possible to its students.

Appropriate Internet and Technology Usage by Minors

Internet & Technology Guidelines:

The internet is a place where I go to learn, meet friends and play games.  I know that through the Internet I can reach all sorts of people all over the world who are of good will and who, like me, sign on to the Internet to share ideas and what we've discovered about ourselves and the world around us. It's a place where I can be myself, have deep discussions or let my imagination roam. I can be creative and do serious work.

But I also know that the Internet can be a place where I can get lost, waste time and sometimes say or do things that I shouldn't. It's also a place where I need to be careful about people and information that could harm me. Following the approved directions of my teachers and parents when using the Internet is essential for my own personal safety, as well as the safety of my classmates and the school.

Student Internet & technology access at school:

  1. All students will have access to Internet resources through the use of approved school electronic devices and under teacher direction and guidance.  This will include the use of school approved educational software and cloud-based programs such as LanSchool, StoneWare, Jupiter Grades, Edmodo, Typing.com, Spelling City, IXL, Brain Pop, ABCya, Classzone and Vocabtest.
  2. Students will NOT be allowed to download, post or have access to any type of social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat or any other type of online community . . . this is strictly prohibited.
  3. The school will provide a secure and monitored server-based network that includes software that restricts access to sites such as YouTube, as well as tracks student usage.
  4. The school will provide a variety of devices* for the appropriate integration of technology into the curriculum.  The school is committed to the proper care and maintenance of all devices on campus as well as the development of a long-range technology plan. The faculty and staff are committed to their own continuing professional education regarding technology as well.

School devices include the following:  Epson interactive white boards, Wolfvision document cameras, Library computer stations and Dell and Lenovo laptops.

Electronic Devices / Phones

Students in Grades 5th to 8th are allowed to bring their cell phones to campus. Kindergarten to 4th are not allowed to bring cell phones to campus. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices/cell phones.

For 5th to 8th grades, cell phones (or any type of electronics) are to be kept in a basket on the homeroom teachers' desks from beginning of the school day until dismissal. At dismissal, phones are returned and should immediately be placed in the backpack. Phones will be confiscated if found in use or out on campus and appropriate discipline consequences given.
