Principal’s Welcome
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St. Mary’s School,
Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!
One of the great accomplishments of the Catholic Church here in the United States is our Catholic school system. In the past, there was much prejudice against Catholics, and our schools gave our children a place to know the faith and practice it freely. Some of our greatest saints were instrumental in founding the institutions we still cherish today. Along with many great American saints such as St. John Neumann and St. Katherine Drexel, generations of faithful Catholics have sweated and sacrificed not only to build the buildings but to strengthen Catholic education. Here at St. Mary’s, we share in this hallowed tradition.
Today there is a still a great need for and value in a Catholic education. The secular society in which we live is pushing God ever further out of our daily life. People are not allowed even to pray in public. Signs of faith have been banished from buildings and, with increased frequency, anyone challenging this trend is persecuted or even prosecuted. Yet we have a God-given right, enshrined in our wonderful nation’s constitution, to worship God as we see fit, without interference. Along with the best education in all the different academic subjects, what a privilege it is to be able to pray freely, to learn the faith, and to share it. Academics prepare us for our future lives, it is true, but faith prepares us to live holy lives.
We know that economic times are still tough out there and that so many of you are making great sacrifices to give your children the best of everything. It is worth it! Far beyond food, clothing, shelter or other needs, is the need to know and love God. You should be congratulated, for not only are you fulfilling the promises you made on your children’s behalf at their baptism— raising them in the faith—you are raising up good citizens here who some day will be citizens in heaven.
I would also like to extend my warmest and sincerest welcome to all our students and their families who perhaps do not share our Catholic faith, but obviously do share so many of the values needed to continue to build the Kingdom of God together. Your presence is a great blessing to St. Mary’s School and we know your experience at St. Mary’s will be a blessing for you.
And may Our Lady, St. Mary of the Assumption, accompany us throughout the new scholastic year, interceding for the needs of all! May God bless you and keep you.
Mrs. Erica Stevens, Principal
