Regular school attendance is required by State law, and responsibility for it is placed on parents. It is vitally important that parents notify the school office before 8:30 a.m. when a child is absent. The school should be notified each day that a child is absent. Per state law when a student has been absent from school, a written excuse signed by the parent or legal guardian must be presented to the teacher upon return before the child may be admitted to the classroom (necessary even when the parent calls school). In the note, please include the date(s) of the absence. An email from the parent may be accepted in lieu of a handwritten note. This is a legal requirement and may not be ignored. A note from a doctor is necessary in cases of communicable illness.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of instructional days (18 days). If a student misses 6 or more days in any trimester for any reason, the parents will be contacted by the school office. If a pattern of chronic absenteeism continues, the student will be subject to an Academic & Attendance Contract. For unexcused absences, a student will be considered truant. See Section 4-04-6 Truancy.
