Homework
Homework may serve multiple purposes: to work toward mastery or extend knowledge of standards already addressed in class, to prepare for a new skill or concept, and to develop positive work habits and independent study.
Parents are to check homework assignments daily. If a student habitually has no
homework, or parents are in doubt as to whether the child understands his/her
work, they should check with the teacher.
Time allotments:
Kindergarten: Approximately
1 hour per week
Grades
1 & 2: Approximately
½ hour daily
Grades
3 to 5: Approximately
1 hour daily
Grades
6 to 8: Approximately
2 hours daily
Parents are strongly encouraged to review their child’s
homework every evening to reinforce the concept of homework as a valuable
activity. One further note seems especially
appropriate regarding homework.
Many students limit their understanding of homework to specific written
assignments. Thus, many children tell their parents they have no homework, when
in reality they may have been assigned to study for a test, read assigned
pages, memorize poetry, etc.
