Dress/Uniform Code

School Uniforms


  1. Uniforms are to be complete, clean, and worn daily unless otherwise specified.

  2. Uniforms should fit appropriately.

  3. Uniforms (particularly sweatshirts) must include the student’s name marked clearly inside, in case of  loss.

  4. Uniforms for SFDS must be purchased from Dennis Uniform.


Uniforms – Girls


GRADES K – 5:

  • Plaid uniform jumper, navy uniform shorts or pants, or navy skort.

  • White or Ash Grey polo shirt with SFDS logo, OR a tapered, fitted white polo shirt with SFDS logo or a white blouse (these last two options are not required to be tucked in).

  • Sweatshirt: Blue pullover, crew neck or ¼ zip with SFDS logo is available from Dennis Uniform.


GRADES 6 – 8

  • Plaid uniform skirt or skort, navy uniform pants or shorts (Length 3” above knee)

  • Blouse, sweatshirt, shoes, and socks are the same as K-5 . 

  • Sweatshirt: Blue pullover, crew neck or ¼ zip with SFDS logo is available from Dennis Uniform.


Girls Church/Formal Dress Day items

  • Sweater: Heather gray V-neck pullover sweater with school logo or heather gray V-neck cardigan with school logo (K-8)

  • Shirt: White short sleeve tailored or tapered blouse (K-8)

  • Tie: Navy adjustable neck tie or navy pearl snap crossover tie (K-8) 


No hooded sweatshirts are offered, except for 8th grade.


Other Outerwear:

The SFDS jacket offered by Dennis Uniform or the blue or gray cardigan sweater offered by Dennis Uniform is acceptable.


Shoes:

Shoes must be mostly black, white, navy blue or gray athletic or oxford-type shoes. Shoes should have a strap, velcro strip, or shoelaces that are a solid color of black or white or match the shoes. “Slip-on” style shoes (shoes that are not secured to the foot with a strap or lace of some kind) are not permitted. Athletic shoes are required on P.E. days. No boots of any kind are allowed except rain boots during inclement weather. No shoes with chunky bottoms or heels may be worn. Both shoes must match in color and style.


Socks:

White, black, navy blue, or gray socks must be above the ankle, and may have a small logo, but no patterns. White, navy blue, or black leggings or tights may be worn under the school uniform on days with colder temperatures. 


Uniforms – Boys


GRADES K - 8:

  • Navy uniform pants or navy uniform walking shorts:

    • Pants must be hemmed above the ground.

    • Shorts may not extend below the middle of the knee.

  • White or Ash Gray polo shirt with SFDS logos

  • Sweatshirt: Blue pullover, crew neck or ¼ zip with SFDS logo available from Dennis uniform.


Boys Church/Formal Dress Day items

  • Sweater: Heather gray V-neck pullover sweater with school logo or heather gray V-neck cardigan with school logo (K-8)

  • Shirt: White short sleeve oxford cloth shirt or white short sleeve dress shirt (shirt must be tucked in)

  • Tie: Navy adjustable neck tie


No hooded sweatshirts are offered, except for 8th grade.


Other Outerwear:

The SFDS jacket offered by Dennis Uniform or the blue or gray cardigan sweater offered by Dennis Uniform is acceptable.

Uniforms for PE

Students must wear Dennis P.E. uniform on P.E days. They also have the option to wear their Dennis Uniform walking shorts when they are scheduled for P.E.

Junior High (6-7-8) girls are allowed to wear Dennis Uniform P.E. shorts. If a class is scheduled for P.E. on a Mass day, that class may wear their P.E. uniform.


Girls P.E. items  (Dennis P.E. Uniforms)

  • Top: Oxford gray 100% cotton t-shirt with school logo (K-8) or gray performance gym t-shirt (K-8)

  • Bottoms: Choice of navy front stretch shorts (K-5), navy mini mesh athletic shorts with school logo (6- 8), navy sweatpants with school logo (K-8), or navy open bottom sweatpants with school logo (K-8). Sweatpants may ONLY be worn on P.E. days.


Boys P.E. items (Dennis P.E. Uniforms)

  • Top: Oxford gray 100% cotton t-shirt with school logo (K-8) or gray performance gym t-shirt (K-8)

  • Bottoms: Navy mini mesh athletic shorts or navy sweatpants with school logo (K-8). Sweatpants may ONLY be worn on P.E. days.



Uniform / Dress Code Guidelines for All Students Grades K-8

  • Pants should be fitted to the waist or belted.  Belts must be worn with tucked in shirts (formal uniform days for boys).  Belts are always optional for Kindergarten students.

  • Do not purchase oversized pants or shorts. Oversize is defined as baggy, low crotch and/or waistband not on the waist.

  • Skirts are to measure no more than 3 inches above the knee at all times during the year.

  • Only a plain white T- shirt or tank top may be worn under the uniform shirt. 

  • During cold weather, a white, long sleeved turtleneck may be worn under the uniform shirt/blouse.


Jewelry

  • A watch may be worn. No smart watches allowed at any time.

  • One pair of post-type earrings on the lower ear lobes is allowed.  No hoops or dangling earrings allowed.

  • Boys may not wear earrings.

  • Body piercing other than ears is not permitted.

  • Only religious necklaces are allowed.

  • No bracelets or rings may be worn to school.  Rubber bracelets given to students to celebrate special events or fundraisers are allowed during the activity time.


Make Up / Body Art

  • Make-up may not be worn to school.

  • Nail polish and/or fake nails may not be worn to school. 

  • No tattoos or other body art, including students’ writing/ drawing on each other.

  • Students wearing makeup will be sent to the health office for makeup removal and receive a Blue Slip.


Hairstyles

  • Students should come to school with hair neatly cut and well-groomed.

  • Hair must be clean and not interfere with vision.

  • Boys’ hair must be above the collar and ear lobes, and above the eyebrows; must be neat and groomed.

  • Hair cannot be dyed, bleached, highlighted, spiked, and no shaved heads.

  • Middle school boys are to be clean-shaven at all times.

  • Students may be asked to get a haircut at the discretion of the school


Hair accessories

  • Dennis uniform grant plaid hair bow, grant plaid padded headband, or grant plaid hair scrunchy. Non-Dennis uniform headbands may be worn but they should be flat headbands that match school uniform colors.

  • Extreme hair ornaments are not acceptable.


Spirit Wear Wednesdays

  • The 1st Wednesday of each month is designated as St. Francis de Sales spirit day.  Students may wear any SFDS clothing items to show their school spirit.  Additional spirit days may be added at the discretion of the school administration


Non Uniform Days

NON-UNIFORM DRESS should be appropriate for school and in good taste (this applies to special events such as Halloween, field trips, etc.) Special attention should be paid to the following:

  1. Properly fitting jeans may be worn as long as they are not overly baggy, faded, torn, bleached, frayed or cut. Jeans or pants must be hemmed and no longer than heel length.

  2. Shorts and skirt length may not extend more than 3” above the knee.

  3. No open toe or open heel shoes or flip-flops are allowed.

  4. Leggings may only be worn under dresses or skirts, not as pants.

  5. The school reserves the right to determine appropriateness of attire.


On Non-uniform days, the following types of clothing are NOT acceptable:

  • Shirts with emblems, letters, or slogans in poor taste

  • Hats (includes beanies, caps, etc.) unless worn for a specific spirit day

  • Undershirts (unless under a collared shirt)

  • Spaghetti strap, off-the-shoulder, bare midriff tops or halter tops

  • Strapless dresses

  • Baggy or oversized clothing

  • Camouflage (army fatigues) type clothing

  • Ragged or torn clothing


IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT WEAR IT!


Uniform Checks

Uniform checks will be conducted daily. Students are expected to dress in correct uniform at all times. Please remember that parents are the primary enforcers of the uniform dress code and that it is important to work together to enforce our uniform policy. All students must wear the Dennis uniform and will be expected to wear the dress uniform on church and formal dress days. (Website: www.dennisuniform.com  – enter our school code: SH00AS). You may purchase uniforms at the Dennis Uniform stores in either Woodland Hills or Burbank (Woodland Hills is a larger store with more in stock).


Out of Uniform Policy and Consequences

If a student is out of uniform, the following consequences occur:

  • Each violation of the uniform and non-uniform code in any way will result in the student receiving a UNIFORM NOTICE. Three Uniform Notices will result in a call home from administration. The family will be given two school days to correct the uniform problem.

  • The school has the right to request parents to bring appropriate clothing or to send students home who have not followed school policy.
