ACADEMIC POLICIES

Grading


Students in Grades 1-3 are graded on the scale of

 "0" (Outstanding), “G” (Good) "S"(Satisfactory) and "NI" (Needs Improvement). 

These grades are developmental in nature and not based on strict percentage grades.


Students in Grade 4 through 8 receive the standard letter grades. The correlation between letter grades and percents is the following:

Students will receive the following grades for Art, Music and Physical Education

 "0" (Outstanding), “G” (Good) "S"(Satisfactory) and "NI" (Needs Improvement). 


Report Cards for students in grades 1-8 will be distributed each trimester according to the school calendar. Progress reports will also be sent home during the interim period. All students will receive at least one progress report and students who are performing at C- or below may receive an additional progress report.   Please contact the school office to request a second reoport card/progress report for separated/divorced parents/guardians. All reports are reviewed by the principal, and an acknowledgement of receipt is signed by the parent and returned to school except for the year-end report. 


Jr. High grades are available online throughout the year and are updated approximately every two weeks. It is the parent’s responsibility to regularly review the online grades at www.gradelink.com. 


Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are given a conference report in December.  Transitional Kindergarten students will receive a progress report in June.​ Kindergarten students are given a progress report in February and June.  


Absences of fifteen (15) or more days during a trimester may result in holding the report card/ grades until the work is made up to the satisfaction of the teacher. If a student does not complete the assigned work due to absence or other reasons, the term 'incomplete' may be entered on the report cards. This will be changed to a letter grade when work is completed in the time designated by the teacher.

Students in Grades 4-8 may earn the following awards:


Awards/Honor Roll Criteria


Scholars

A student with a 4.0 in the core academic areas qualifies for Scholars award. These students must also be in good behavioral standing.


Honors

A student with a 3.30-3.99 in the core academic areas qualifies for Honors award. These students must also be in good behavioral standing.


Students in Grades 1-8 may earn the following awards


Citizenship

A student with Outstanding in Behavior and Effort and no tardies for the trimester.


Principal’s Award

A student who highly exemplifies multiple Schoolwide Learning Expectations throughout the trimester.


Outstanding Improvement

A student with outstanding growth overall from the previous grade period.


SPIRIT Award

Spirit Awards are given throughout the year during the weekly assembly. It recognize all members of the community who exemplify the Schoolwide Learning Expectations.


Permanent Records

The school keeps a record of accumulated academic records for each student. This information is kept on file in the school office and is transferred when a student leaves for another elementary school or enters high school. Legal parents/guardians have the right to access the cumulative record. In the event a parent wishes access to the cumulative record, please make an appointment with the principal.


Promotion/Retention

A student with an "F" average in two major subjects may be retained, given a conditional promotion, or asked to transfer. Promotion may be dependent on satisfactory completion of summer remediation. In certain circumstances, a student in Grades K to 6 can repeat a grade once. Parents will be notified by the mid progress report in the 2nd trimester if there is a possibility of retention for their child. Any student who drops below a passing grade by the end of the second trimester is also at risk of retention. In consultation with the teachers and parents, the final decision for retention or promotion is determined by the principal.


A diploma will be issued to those students who have satisfactorily completed the course of studies for students attending St. Elizabeth Parish School as prescribed by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A student must earn a minimum 1.0 grade point average in academic subjects, and all financial obligations must be met, to receive the diploma.



Transfer of Records

Student Transfers and Graduation

Whenever a pupil transfers from one school to another, a copy of the Cumulative Student Report and the original Health Record shall be transferred by the former school upon a request from the school where the pupil intends to enroll. The original Cumulative Student Report will remain at the school. A record of the transfer, the reason for the transfer, and the name of the school to which the student is transferring or entering after graduation should be entered on the original copy of the Cumulative Student Report and in the Student Attendance Register. Official transcripts are not given to students or parents.


Damaged or Loaned Property

Under California law, a private school cannot refuse to provide student records to a requesting school because of any charges, including tuition or fees that are owed by the student or parent. However, the school may withhold from parents/guardians the grades, diploma, or transcripts of a pupil pending payment of certain amounts for da

​maged property, or the return of loaned property, in accordance with school policy.


Tutoring     

  • If a student requires private tutoring or parents wish to have a student tutored in school subjects, the  parents are responsible for engaging the tutor and paying all tutoring costs. The school may assist the parents in identifying tutoring resources.


  • Teachers may not be paid for tutoring students assigned to their classes. With prior permission from the principal, teachers may tutor other students who attend the school and be paid for such tutoring by the parents.


  • A school may arrange with independent contractors or entities, who are not teachers or staff at the school to provide tutoring on a fee basis. Independent entities must have appropriate licenses, agreements for use of the premises and insurance.


  • All tutors and entities must comply with the procedures and policies of the extended school day program and the Archdiocesan Guidelines for Adults Interacting with Minors at Parish or Parish School Activities or Events.
