Eligibility requirements

  • Academic Performance: Maintaining a good grade is a requirement to participate in student council, emphasizing the importance of academic success.
  • Citizenship & Behavior: Students are typically expected to demonstrate positive behavior, good citizenship, and adherence to school rules to be considered for student council positions.
  • Teacher Recommendations: Teacher recommendations can be a part of the application process, highlighting the importance of positive teacher-student relationships and identifying students who exhibit leadership qualities.
  • Grade Levels: Eligibility for specific officer positions (e.g., President, Vice-President) may be limited to 7th and 8th grade).
  • Commitment and Responsibility: Being a student council member can be time-consuming, so students must be able to devote the necessary time and effort to fulfill their responsibilities. 

Campaigning guidelines

  • No Bribery: Offering favors, such as candy or money, to solicit votes is strictly prohibited to ensure a fair and ethical election.
  • Poster and Materials Rules:
    • Campaign materials must be pre-approved by advisors or school administration to ensure age-appropriateness and respectfulness.
    • Posters should be displayed only in designated areas and removed promptly after the election
    • The size and type of campaign materials may be restricted (e.g., banners, posters).
  • Positive and Respectful Campaigning: Negative campaigning, derogatory remarks about opponents, the school, or any group are forbidden to encourage a positive and respectful election environment.Speech Guidelines:
    • Speeches often have time limits (e.g., 2-3 minutes) to ensure all candidates have an equal opportunity to address the student body.
    • Speeches should focus on positive contributions and qualities rather than making unrealistic campaign promises.
    • Creative elements like props or music may be permitted in speeches, but nothing should be thrown into the audience.
    •  Speeches should be appropriate for school and the age group.
  • Student-Centered Elections: It is important that the election process remains student-centered, meaning parents should not be involved in on-campus campaigning activities. 

Voting and election procedures

  • Fair and Transparent Elections: Elections need to be fair and transparent, and the voting system should be explained clearly to students.
  • Secret Ballot: Elections are typically conducted using secret ballots to protect the confidentiality of votes.
  • Election Committee and Advisors: An election committee, often comprised of faculty/staff, and student council advisors are usually responsible for overseeing and counting ballots.
  • Results Announcement: Election results are usually announced to students and parents following the election.
