TUTORING AT MRS
The school’s educational program, in alignment with the school’s philosophy, seeks to challenge students to work to their full potential. To accommodate those students with academic needs, Maria Regina School (MRS) provides afterschool homework help and peer tutoring. Ordinarily, every other week teachers facilitate afterschool tutoring for select struggling learners. Tutoring of students who are experiencing challenges in reading and math are given priority as part of this schoolwide intervention measure.
The in-school and afterschool program, as a whole, may serve as an extension of the schoolwide intervention aspect when adequate resourceful personnel is available since it affords students the opportunity to complete class and homework assignments with remedial support and tutoring in a supervised environment. In addition, alumni and other high school students from time to time give back to the community by assisting with afterschool daycare and homework tutorial as well as providing one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction in order to complete their requirements for service hours. Any tutoring service offered as part of the schoolwide intervention measure at MRS is carried out in alignment of the archdiocesan tutoring policy as explicated below.
Title I (Improving Academic Achievement of the Disadvantage) Services:
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Title I, government funded, program is offered to help students who qualify and are performing below average proficiency to succeed in reading and math. LAUSD provides on-site resource teachers to assist students in Kindergarten through 6th grade who qualify for extra help in the area of reading for a full school year and a math for a semester. The onsite Title I Math and Reading teachers provide differentiated learning and remedial instructions to lower quartile students using supplemental materials intended as an intervention measures to improve student learning and further meet student needs.
Title I may be offered to students at Maria Regina School. In August and early September, teachers will administer assessment to all students. Any student who qualifies for additional assistance will be referred to the Title I teacher. Thereafter, a letter will be sent home followed by a meeting with the Title I teacher informing parents of the resources available. This supplemental resource is an ongoing pull-out of students. This allow for students to receive small group and/or one-on-one assistance.
INCLUSION PROCEDURES: STEP & MAP
Through the mission of the Archdiocese, our schools strive to serve children with varied learning needs. All educators in Archdiocesan schools follow “Directions for the Inclusion Process in Catholic Schools: Support Team Education Plan Process (STEP) and Minor Adjustment Plan Process (MAP)". Parents or guardians who feel that their student may need a minor adjustment to enable him/her to participate in the general education curriculum of the school should consult the student's teacher and Principal to determine how best to meet the students' needs. Parents or guardians may request the “Disability Discrimination Complaint Review Process" from the Principal to address unresolved issues.
