Discipline Policy

Classroom Rules/Consequences

Each teacher has the right and responsibility to develop specific rules and consequences based on the school’s philosophy of discipline. Consequences for failure to keep the class rules will be made known to each student and parent. In addition to these rules and consequences posted in every classroom, the following rules are to be observed:

General Student Rules

  1. Fighting or “play fighting” is not allowed and subject to a suspension.

  2. Any use of vulgar, bad, or inappropriate language is not allowed.

  3. Students will be responsible for the protection and preservation of school property.

  4. Glass items, toys, and magazines not associated with the curriculum, are not to be brought to school.  Electronic or battery operated equipment, such as video games and cell phones are not allowed on school grounds without the permission of the Principal. (Exception: B.Y.O.D. Day)

  5. Students are not to write notes or pass notes with the intention of hurting someone else’s feelings at any time.

  6. Copying answers or giving answers is considered cheating and is not allowed.

  1. Students are to eat in designated snack areas and on the lunch grounds unless special permission is given to eat elsewhere. All wrappers are to be thrown away in the trash cans provided. There is to be no eating while playing because of the danger of choking.

  2. Students are to walk in an orderly manner to their assigned area on the lunch ground. They are to conduct themselves in a courteous manner. Food or objects are never to be thrown. All trash is to be thrown in trash cans and lunch areas kept clean. Recyclables should also be placed in the proper bins.  Students are not allowed to leave the lunch area without permission of the adult on supervision.

  3. Students should play in the area to which they are assigned.

  4. Equipment should always be properly marked. If a class misplaces or loses their equipment, they are to report this to the school office immediately.

  5. Report any injuries or problems to the adults on supervision. The office is only for those who are injured or ill. Students must not go to the office during recess without permission from an adult on supervision unless it is an emergency.

  6. Students are not allowed in the classroom at any time unless a teacher or staff member is present.

  7. Students may not leave the school grounds at any time during the school day, daycare, or extracurricular activities without permission from a parent who has signed the student out.

  8. Only students participating in a supervised school sponsored activity are permitted to remain on school grounds after dismissal.

  9.  Students should always follow the Archdiocesan Electronic Policy.

  10.  Textbooks should be covered at all times.

  11.  Gum chewing is not permitted on campus.

  12.  All sports equipment is to be used in the manner for which it is intended. A student is not to kick a volleyball or another ball that is not supposed to be kicked.

  13. Defacing or damaging school property or the property of school personnel or other students, including changing computer screen savers or damaging any technology equipment belonging to the school is never allowed. (A fine may be imposed on the student to cover the cost of damage)

**Three Behavior Infractions of any kind in one trimester is equal to one Detention.

Detentions

**Detentions are tracked for the entire school year and do not start over at the semester.

Probation: Conduct/Behavior

A student may be placed on Conduct/Behavior Probation for unacceptable conduct. A probation note will be sent home to the parents with an evaluation of the student’s overall performance.  If a student does not show progress in conduct/behavior, the following consequences are possible (not necessarily in this order):

2) Student placed on a behavior contract.

3) Student suspended from school.

4) Student expelled from school.

General Guidelines for Suspension and Expulsion

Suspension from school is not an ordinary consequence. It will be used when other corrective measures have failed or a serious offense is committed. When a student is suspended, the parents will be notified of the suspension and the reason for this disciplinary measure.

A student may be suspended or dismissed for inappropriate acts related to school activity or attendance which occur at any time, including but not limited to:

  1. While on school grounds.

  2. While going to or coming from school.

  3. While going to or coming from a school-sponsored activity.

  4. While present at a school-sponsored activity, whether actively involved or simply present.

Procedures for Suspension and Expulsion

  1. The student shall be given oral or written notice of the charges against him/her, and a fair opportunity to present his/her side of the story.

  2. The gravity of suspension requires that notice be given to the parents by telephone or other appropriate methods within a reasonable time, followed by a written notice signed by the principal.

  3. A conference with the parents, student, and principal may be arranged.

  4. A written form of suspension must be signed by the parents and student. On this form, the exact length of the suspension period shall be specified and the reason for the suspension clearly noted.

  5. In “emergency” situations constituting a clear and present danger to the lives, safety, or health of students or school personnel, suspension may be imposed without a prior conference. In this case, notice to parents will follow within 24 hours.

  6. A suspension must be approved by the principal.

  7. Since the grounds for suspension ordinarily differ only in degree from the grounds of expulsion, the possibility of expulsion or a recommended transfer for continued or repeated misconduct will be clearly stated to the student and parents.

  8. The length of any suspension is left to the discretion of the principal in accord with the nature of the conduct and all circumstances.

  9. To the extent that such opportunity can be reasonably provided, a suspended student has the right to make up all assignments and tests missed during the period of suspension.

The final decision to expel a student rests with the principal and, with the knowledge and consent of the pastor.

Criteria to Be Used For Suspension and Expulsion:

  1. Fighting in any form between pupils

  2. Actions gravely detrimental to the moral or spiritual welfare of other students.

  13. Leaving the school grounds during the school day, daycare, or extracurricular activities without proper permission from the school and parent

Student Possessions

Although a student may have control of his/her desk against other students, his/her possession is not exclusive against the school and its officials. It is the right of the school authorities to inspect the students’ desks, bags of any kind, purses, wallets, supply containers, lunch containers under the students’ control or any type of closed storage. The school reserves the right to prevent the use of the desk or any school or personal property in illicit ways or for illegal purposes.

Arrests and Court Orders

Students may be arrested or subpoenaed as a witness without parental knowledge or permission. The school will make every effort to contact the parents to inform them of the action and the whereabouts of the student.

Right to Amend: The Principal reserves the right to amend this handbook during the school year.  Parents and Students will be notified of changes.
