BMHS ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Regular attendance is essential for academic success and personal growth. This policy applies to all absences—excused or unexcused—in each class period. Every 6th tardy equals 1 absence.
0–5 Absences (per semester, per period): Occasional absences due to illness or medical appointments are expected. No formal action is taken, but consistent attendance is strongly encouraged.
6–7 Absences: Parents will be contacted. The student may meet with their counselor or Dean and will be placed on an Attendance Contract for the rest of the semester.
8–9 Absences: A formal meeting with the Vice Principal or Principal is required. The student will be placed on Attendance Probation, which may impact eligibility for extracurricular roles and leadership positions (ie. extracurricular activities, including athletic captaincies, club leadership, ASB roles, and other school privileges).
10 Absences: The student risks loss of course credit and possible dismissal. A final meeting with the Principal will determine next steps, including possible alternative education options.
Additional Guidelines:
- Absences are tracked by class period. The policy applies even if only one class reaches the threshold.
- Every 6th tardy = 1 absence
- Unexcused absences for vacations result in zeroes for all missed work.
- School-authorized events do not count as absences.
- Parents should notify the school of any extended medical or extraordinary circumstances; documentation may allow for accommodations.
EXCESSIVE ABSENCES
: The school calendar is given to families at the beginning of the school year with advance publication of major dates. Family business, vacation plans, personal leaves, etc. should not interfere with school time. The school reserves the right to deny credit to a student who has been absent for more than 10 days per semester regardless of the status of the absence (excused or unexcused). Please refer to the BMHS Attendance Policy.
In the event of an extenuating circumstance where the student cannot attend classes for more than 3 weeks and there is medical documentation regarding the illness, the Academic Counselor in consultation with the Vice Principal and Principal will assist the parent in determining the best course of action. If a student becomes deficient in units due to a medical absence the student must withdraw from BMHS, attend UC/CSU approved courses to bring units current. Once the student's units are current they may return to BMHS. If the student is in his/her senior year such extended absence may make it impossible for the student to graduate from BMHS.
