Program Introduction


The St. Catherine of Siena School iPad Program is designed to enrich students’ education and prepare them for the use of technology in the real world. In order to participate in the iPad Program, parents and students agree to abide by the rules outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook, the St. Catherine of Siena School’s Acceptable Use Policy for Technology Handbook, and the technology policies enforced by the Los Angeles Archdiocese and Department of Catholic Schools. All use of technology, both on and off campus, must be done in accordance with the St. Catherine of Siena School mission and philosophy.


The iPad remains the property of St. Catherine of Siena School. The school reserves the right to inspect iPads at any point in the school year. Misuse of a school iPad will result in disciplinary action.


In order to maintain the integrity of the iPad Program, all students and parents/guardians agree to the Conditions of Use outlined in this document.


 

  1. Disclaimer

    1. Participation in the St. Catherine of Siena School iPad Program is MANDATORY.

    2. St. Catherine of Siena School reserves the right to amend the Acceptable Use Policy at any time. Parents will be informed of any changes through the St. Catherine of Siena Times. 

    3. In the event of a policy amendment, changes will be in effect the day that the St. Catherine of Siena Times update is released, regardless of what the published  states.

    4. This iPad Acceptable Use Policy applies to St. Catherine students at all times, both on and off campus. Device use and browser history is recorded at all times and is subject to review by St. Catherine of Siena and/or Archdiocesan personnel.

    5. The school’s iPads will be radio monitored by the Department of Catholic Schools, DCS, all the time.


 

  1. The Use of the School’s iPad

    1. The use of a school iPad is mandatory for all students at St. Catherine of Siena School from TK to 8th grade.

    2. The school’s iPads include all the educational applications (apps) the students will use during the school year. Parents will not be asked or required to buy any apps for their student.

    3. A portion of a student’s grades will have a direct correlation with the use of the school’s iPad/apps. Failure to complete iPad/App assignments will lead to a negative impact on grades.

    4. Homework using the school’s iPad will be assigned on a regular basis.

    5. No student/family can “opt-out” of the school’s iPad program. Participation is MANDATORY.



 

  1. Technology Fee & iPad Distribution

    1. The iPads that are issued by St. Catherine of Siena School are property of the school and the Department of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

    2. The purpose of these iPads is to make technology available as a learning tool for St. Catherine of Siena staff & students.

    3. In order for an iPad to be assigned and released to a student, the annual Technology Fee must be paid first. 


 

  1. General iPad Care & Protection Guidelines

    1. Students are responsible for knowing how to properly operate and protect their assigned iPad.

    2. All iPads MUST be protected from cold, heat and moisture.

    3. All iPads should be cleaned with a soft, dry, anti-scratch cloths ONLY. No paper towels.

    4. All iPads and cases must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers or labels not affixed by the school.

    5. All iPads MUST remain in the provided iPad case. DO NOT, under any circumstances, change the iPad’s case.


 

  1. iPad Maintenance and Security

    1. Students and Parents are responsible for securing the iPad.

    2. Devices should not be left in classrooms overnight (2nd-8th grade only), in cars or other unsupervised areas. TK-1st grade students will secure the devices with their homeroom teacher every day.

    3. If an iPad is damaged or malfunctions, it must be brought immediately to the homeroom teacher or the school’s Technology Coordinator on the homeroom teacher’s recommendation.

    4. If the device is lost or stolen, it must be reported immediately to the school. Parents will be responsible for replacing the device and its case. The replacement cost of an iPad is $600 and the cost of the case is $30.

    5. Students and Parents are not permitted to repair, alter or replace iPads without the express authorization of St. Catherine of Siena School. 




 

  1. iPad Insurance Coverage

    1.  School iPads are insured through Sprint; repairs and replacement of the devices will be done through Sprint’s services.

    2. Some repairs carry an additional fee that will be the responsibility of the family.

      1. 1st Repairable damage will carry a $100 deductible charge to the student’s parent/guardian.

      2. 2nd Repairable damage will carry a $200 deductible charge to the student’s parent/guardian.

    3. If the iPad is broken beyond repair and needs to be replaced, the insurance covers this event one time only for the life of the iPad. 

      1. The deductible charge is $250 to the student’s parent/guardian.

      2. Any additional replacements will incur the full replacement price of a new device, including all apps and accessories associated with its use.

    4. Sprint Insurance DOES NOT cover the loss of an iPad.

      1. The student’s parent/guardian will be charged for the full replacement price of the iPad, including all apps and accessories associated with its use.






  1. General Expectations

    1. Students are responsible for understanding and following all regulations described in the Acceptable Use Policy and the Parent/Student Handbook.

    2. When on school campus, students may not use devices before or after school.

    3. Students may not remove any management systems set in place by the school; this includes removing restrictions and/or “jailbreaking” the device.

    4. Students must charge iPads at home. Devices must be at least 60% charged at the start of the school day. 

    5. Devices are required for academic work. Should a student come to school without the device, parents will be responsible for bringing the iPad to school.

    6. The “Find My iPad” function must be on at all times.

    7. The lock screen image will be a clear, unobstructed, school-appropriate picture of the student’s face. 

    8. The iPad background must be school-appropriate.

    9. All pictures and videos saved on the iPad must be school-appropriate.

    10. Personal and family pictures should not be stored on the school iPad.

    11. All iPads must remain on the desk when working with it in class.

    12. No iPad should be turned on unless specifically instructed to do so by a St. Catherine of Siena staff member.

    13. Students and Parents/Guardians are the only people authorized to use the iPad. Other family members (siblings, grandparents, etc.) or friends should not have use of the iPad.

    14. A school iPad can be used at home as a hotspot for a student’s computer/laptop. 

      1. Be aware that the iPads include a radio that monitors their use all the time, including the internet activity when used as a hotspot.

    15. School iPads are subject to search by any school staff member at any time.

    16. Students are not to share, exchange or use other student’s iPad. Suspension will be enforced to a student that “plays”, writes or uses another student’s iPad.

 

  1. Applications & Files

    1. Students are responsible for saving all files on the iPad. The school is not responsible for any lost data.

    2. Earphones may only be used with permission from the teacher.

    3. Students should have earphones/headphones ready all the time.

    4. All software downloaded to the iPad by the school must remain on the device.

    5. The school may add or remove applications and software throughout the school year.

    6. Students and parents MAY NOT link personal Apple IDs to the iPad.

    7. Students and parents MAY NOT download any additional applications to the iPad.

    8. Students and parents MAY NOT use the device for social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) or games (Fortnite, Minecraft, etc.) Suspension and/or expulsion will be the consequence of this act.

    9. The iPad camera may only be used with expressed permission from the teachers and staff. Students may not take and/or distribute images or videos of other students outside of school assignments.


 

  1. Prohibited Use

    1. Should the use of a school iPad be connected to criminal activity, all knowledge and applicable information will be reported to the police and all appropriate authorities.

    2. Inappropriate use of a school iPad will result in immediate disciplinary action that includes:

      1. Conduct Referral

      2. Detention

      3. Mandatory Parent-Teacher/Principal meeting

      4. Suspension

      5. Expulsion

    3. Prohibited use that will result in disciplinary action includes, but is not limited to: 

      1. Using devices during Recess/Lunch periods without express consent from teachers or staff.

      2. Exchanging iPads with another student.

      3. Using the iPads for plagiarism or cheating.

      4. Creating, accessing or distributing offensive, profane, bullying/threatening, pornographic, obscene, rumors/gossip, racist/prejudice content or other content not aligned with the school’s mission and philosophy.

      5. Using chat rooms and messaging services not authorized by teachers.

      6. Spamming (sending mass or inappropriate emails) or sending chain letters

      7. Gaining or attempting to gain access to another student’s or staff member’s accounts, files or data.

      8. Use of school internet or school accounts for illegal activity or financial/commercial gain.

      9. Bypassing the St. Catherine of Siena School web filter by any means.

      10. Using or possessing hacking software.

      11. Any other misuse that doesn’t reflect our Catholic values.
