​​School Uniform and Dress Code Policies 

  • Uniforms are to be complete, clean and worn daily unless otherwise specified.
  • Uniforms should fit appropriately (nothing excessively oversized or tight). 
  • Uniforms (particularly sweatshirts) must include the student’s name marked clearly inside, in case of loss. 
  • Uniforms for SJW must be purchased from Dennis Uniform
    • 6459 De Soto Avenue, Woodland Hills, school code SH00AZ. 
    • ​​Any uniform style offered in the St. Joseph the Worker School Dennis catalog is acceptable - https://www.dennisuniform.com/schools/SH00AZ 
  • ​All children must be in complete uniform everyday
    • P.E. uniform on P.E. days (Monday and Wednesday)
    • Formal Uniform on Mass days (Fridays and other specified days) and special occasions. 
    • On rare occasions when a student is unable to wear their uniform, a written note is required from the parents stating the reason.

​​​Formal Uniform - Formal dress is expected at Mass and on special occasions. 

  • Long pants are required for boys. 
    • Belts must be worn.
  • Long pants (belt must be worn), skirts (girls grades 6-8), or jumpers (girls grades TK-5) are required.
  • Plaid ties are required.
  • The traditional white broadcloth shirt with SJW emblem is required. Shirts must be tucked in when indoors.
  • Red cardigan sweater with emblem is required. 
    • No other sweatshirt or jacket may be worn to Mass.

General Uniform Guidelines (Boys & Girls)
  • Smart watches, or any other watch or device with the capability to send/receive text messages or has access to the internet may not be worn.
  • Dennis Uniform pants, or skorts (girls only) or shorts of an appropriate length, may be worn on non-formal, non-PE days.
  • Dennis Uniform or athletic department approved sweatshirts and jackets with the SJW emblem/logo may be worn. These include (from Dennis Uniform ONLY) navy fleece zippered jackets, hooded microfiber zippered jackets, and red sweatshirts, as well as SJW athletics sweatshirts.
  • 8th graders may wear their custom 8th grade shirts and sweatshirts as an 8th grade privilege, not a right. This includes Mass and PE days. 8th grade shirts are not required to be tucked in. 
  • Red and/or gray short- or long-sleeved polo shirts with the SJW emblem may be worn on non-PE or non-formal dress days. Polo shirts must be tucked in when indoors.
    • ​Long sleeved shirts worn as an undershirt must match the color of the polo shirt being worn.
  • ​​PE uniforms purchased through Dennis Uniform must be worn on PE days (Mondays and Wednesdays)
  • Shoes may be any combination of black and white. 
    • ​No designs, accents, or logos permitted unless they are black or white.
    • Shoes must have no-skid, rubber soles.
    • Shoes must have velcro or lace closures - NO slip ons
    •  Heely-skate shoes are not permitted.
    • Shoes with holes (including but not limited to Crocs, Kanye West water shoes, etc) are not permissible.
    • Sneakers, Mary Janes, or Vans-type shoes are acceptable.
    • Open-toed and/or open-heeled shoes are a safety hazard and my not be worn. 
    • Platform shoes or shoes with an heel present a safety hazard and may not be worn.
    • Boots (Uggs, Doc Martins, etc) are not permissible.
  • Socks must be worn and visible above the shoe.
​​​Girls' Uniform

  • Shirts must be Dennis Uniform red or gray polo with the SJW emblem. Long or short sleeves are acceptable. Shirts must be tucked in indoors.
  • Blouses must be Dennis Uniform and have the SJW emblem. Long or short sleeves are acceptable.
    • ​​​TK-5th grade wear the round collar.
    • ​​6-8th grade wear the pointed collar.
    • Blouses must be tucked in unless they have the wide over-blouse hem.
  • ​TK-5th grade students wear the plaid jumper. For modesty, jumper hems must be within 2 inches of the top of the kneecap when standing.
  • 6-8th grade students wear the plaid skirt. For modesty, skirts must be within 2 inches of the top of the kneecap.
  • For modesty, bike shorts may be worn under skirts or jumpers. 
  • ​Leggings may not be worn.
  • Solid red, white, navy, or black tights may be worn.
  • Solid red, white, navy, or black socks may be worn and must be visible above the shoe.
    • ​Ankle socks and knee socks are permissible.
    • Thigh-high socks or stockings are not permissible.

​​​Boys' Uniform
  • Shirts must be Dennis Uniform red or gray polo with the SJW emblem. Long or short sleeves are acceptable. Shirts must be tucked in indoors.
  • Dennis Uniform ONLY navy pants or shorts may be worn.
    • ​Pants and shorts must fit at the waist.
    • Belts must be worn.
    • No oversized, baggy, or sagging shorts or pants may be worn.
    • Jean-style Levis, dungarees, blue jeans, or play-type pants are not part of the uniform.
  • Solid white or black socks without designs must be worn and be visible above the shoe. 
​​​PE Uniform (Girls and Boys)

  • TK-8th Grade Shorts: ​​Red nylon mini-mesh gym shorts with SJW logo on leg. 
  • TK-8th Grade Shirts: Grey t-shirt with SJW emblem
    • ​Also permissible: Summer Knights Academy, Jog-A-Thon, and swim t-shirts. 
  • Sports jerseys and uniforms may be worn on game days that fall on a PE day. 
  • ​8th grade may wear custom class t-shirts and sweatshirts on PE days. 
  • Grades TK-8: Red sweatshirts and sweatpants or sports sweatpants and sweatshirt with SJW emblem 
  • Grade 8 Privilege: 8th grade custom sweatshirts. 
  • P.E. Uniform (shorts, t-shirts, sweatpants) may only be worn on P.E. days. Sweatshirts may be worn every day.​​​


Personal Appearance

Students are expected to be well-groomed, with conservative hairstyles, and in complete uniform. All clothing should be clearly labeled with your child’s name in order to help ensure the return of lost items. 

General rules include but are not limited to the following: 

Boys

  • Hair is to be a conservative style
    • ​It may not be tinted in any way (including but not limited to highlights, tinting, dye)
    • Hair  may not touch the collar.
    • Hair may not cover the eyes. 
  • ​Earrings of any type are not permissible. 
  • Jewelry of any type is not permissible with the exception of Catholic religious crucifix or cross necklaces​ and saints wristbands. 
  • Rosaries worn around the neck are not permitted.
  • Facial hair (including but not limited to moustache, beard, goatee, or early facial hair growth) is not permitted.
  • Hats or head coverings (including sweatshirt hoods) may not be worn indoors.
Girls:
  • ​Hair is not to be tinted in any way, including but not limited to dye, highlights, bayalage, peroxide, hair chalk
  • Hair must be worn neatly, back and away from the face. 
  • One stud earring per ear may be worn in the ear lobe. ​
    • ​Any type of hoop earring, including "earlobe hugging" type hoops, are not permitted and students will be asked to remove them.
    • Students with multiple ear piercings will be asked to remove all but one stud earring from each ear.
    • Repeated requests to remove jewelry may result in disciplinary action.
  • No other jewelry (including rings) is permissible with the exception of Catholic religious crucifix or cross necklaces, and Saints wristbands. 
  • Rosaries worn around the neck are not permitted. 
  • Acrylic nails, nail polish, or any type of makeup (including, but not limited to, mascara, eyelash extensions, tinted lip gloss, foundation) is not permitted.
  • Hats or other head coverings are not permitted indoors, including hoods on sweatshirts or jackets.​
Random personal appearance checks will be made. The administration reserves the right to make the final decision regarding appropriate dress and appearance.

Non-Uniform Dress/"Free Dress"
A student's appearance affects their attitude and behavior. Students are expected to follow the non-uniform/free dress guidelines when not wearing their uniform. 
  • A "Non-Uniform Dress" day is one in which the type of attire is stated. For example, students may be permitted to wear "red, white, or blue tops with jeans". In this instance, students may ONLY wear jeans, and not "free dress."
  • A "free dress" day is one in which students may wear their choice of clothing items. An example of this is on their birthday.
Clothing worn for non-uniform/free dress days must be appropriate and modest
  • Socks must be worn.
  • Shoes must be closed toe and appropriate for recess/PE class. 
  • Oversized clothing, bare midriffs, short-shorts/cut-offs, "distressed"/ripped/torn items, offensive slogans, leggings/jeggings, or gang-related clothing is not permitted. 
  • The administration reserves the right to determine appropriateness of free dress clothing. 
  • The administration also reserves the right to require that parents bring an appropriate change of clothes to school, if a student is inappropriately dressed.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR STUDENT DRESS 
If a student frequently offends against normal standards of dress, grooming, hygiene, or uniform regulations, and has been corrected in this regard, the cooperation of the parents shall be sought to correct the problem. Lack of improvement in personal appearance is grounds for suspension of a student during the school day. The administration also reserves the right to require that parents bring an appropriate change of clothes to school, if a student is inappropriately dressed.
