The purpose of homework is to reinforce material already taught and to foster habits of independent study. Parents should be mindful those homework assignments, as well as short and long-term projects, are considered homework. The time spent on homework should be quiet and uninterrupted and should not exceed the following:

Suggested Homework Time Allotments for Grade Levels

  • Grades 1 - 2: 1/2 hour
  • Grades3-6: 1hour
  • Grades7-8: 2 hours

Parents need to realize that in a highly competitive world, students in the upper grades may be asked to do 30 min per subject per day, therefore sometimes exceeding the recommendation.

The teacher has the discretion to decide if a student benefits from an extended homework time allotment due to make-up homework, projects and research projects. It is the responsibility of the student to see to it that assignments are properly written down and completed on time. Concerns pertinent to homework must be immediately addressed to the teacher who assigned the homework. We urge all parents to take an active interest in the child's homework. Students are expected to make up the work they miss when absent.
