Do Not Destroy Policy

If a staff member believes, or the archdiocese informs him or her, that archdiocesan documents or records are relevant to current civil or canonical litigation, or potential civil or canonical litigation (i.e., a dispute has arisen that is likely to lead to litigation), then the staff member must preserve those documents or records. The staff member who believes that an exception to the retention schedule may apply, or has any questions regarding the possible applicability of that exception, should contact the person in charge, or the regional bishop, or the moderator of the curia, or the chancellor, who will, in turn, consult canonical and legal counsel as appropriate. This exception always supersedes any previously or subsequently established destruction schedule for the affected documents or records.
