LITURGY AND FAITH FORMATION

Students in Grades K-8 attend the weekly Parish Mass at Saint Paschal Baylon Church at 8:15 a.m. each Friday, and on designated Holy Days of Obligation during the school year, as a student body. SPBS students participate in these weekly parish liturgies by serving Mass, writing and reading the introduction, proclaiming the readings, bringing up the gifts, participating in our school choir, as cantors, through Sign Ministry, and through “acting out" the Gospel. Each week a different class is assigned “ownership" of this special SPBS-coordinated Celebration of the Eucharist. Parents, family, and friends of our students are welcome to join us at our Friday school-coordinated Masses.

SPBS students also participate in SPB Parish Masses; the assigned classes and dates are listed on the SPBS School Calendar. Students are expected to participate when their class has been assigned to help host an SPB Parish Sunday Mass.  Non-participation will affect their religion grade.

Catholic students in grades 4-8 are also expected to train and become altar servers for the parish as an integral part of their faith formation.  In addition, prayer services, Stations of the Cross, confessions, and para-liturgies are scheduled throughout the year to enable SPBS to gather as a community to honor and celebrate liturgical events. Notification of dates and times are indicated on the SPBS Calendar, in the weekly “Bear Paw" newsletter, and/or posted on the school website. To help model our faith, parents are especially encouraged to attend all SPBS Masses and para-liturgies, and in particular volunteer to participate in our annual “Family Mass" in October. Please see the SPBS calendar for dates/times of liturgies and Masses.

In addition, SPBS recommends the following family faith formation activities:

DEVELOPING YOUR CHILD'S FAITH

  • Go to Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days (at a minimum) with your children.
  • Talk about God and our Catholic Faith on a daily basis with your children.
  • Pray before meals and at bedtime with your children.
  • Explain and show your children how our Catholic Faith has made a positive difference in your life. You are your child's first and foremost religion teacher.
  • Encourage Stewardship and Christian Service in your family: model it as well.
  • Celebrate liturgical and holy seasons as a family.
  • Help your child develop an active, moral conscience, including taking them to the Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently; and by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation with your child.
  • Pray the rosary and other “formal" Catholic prayers at home with your child.
