EMERGENCY/SAFETY PROCEDURES ON CAMPUS

Life Safety System

The building is equipped with a life safety system including smoke detectors, manual pull stations and fire sprinklers. All these elements are designed to set off alarms as well as to

transmit a signal to the central alarm station in the Main Office, activate sprinklers. The life safety system has a display panel in the Main Office that will indicate the location

of the emergency and will notify the Fire Department.

Bomb Threat

In the event that we receive a bomb threat:

1. Listen carefully and write down as much information as possible, especially information about where the bomb is located and when it is set to go off.

2. Immediately notify the Main Office with the information.

In the unlikely event that you discover or suspect a device to be a bomb:

1. DO NOT TOUCH OR DISTURB IT IN ANY WAY.

2. Clear yourself and others from the area.

3. Notify the Main Office.

Fire

At the first sign of a fire in your room or area:

1. Notify the Main Office so that they can call 9-1-1. Tell them the exact location of the fire and what is burning.

2. Extinguish small fires using the nearest fire extinguisher.

3. Close windows and doors. Evacuate the area and warn others.

4. Follow the procedures outlined in the “Fire Drill” area of the drill procedures. Doors closed. Exit the building. Line up on the basketball courts.

If you suspect that the fire is outside of your room or area:

1. Feel the door. If it is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT.

2. Notify the Main Office so they can call 9-1-1.

3. If the door is not hot, open it cautiously – stand behind the door and be prepared to close it quickly.

In any event, do not try to put out a fire that appears out of control. Stay calm and exit the building safely.

Earthquake

1. Teacher or staff member that is present shouts the command "Earthquake! Drop, Cover, Hold On!"

2. When the shaking has stopped, before you exit your room, take 10 seconds to look around and observe any damage and/or injuries.

3. Take your classroom roll book, emergency binder, and emergency bag.

4. Select the white "All Out" or the red "Casualties/danger inside" sign and hang it on your door. Leave classroom doors OPEN.

5. Students are to assemble at the basketball courts, keeping classes separate, and teachers will take roll.

Lockdown

In the event there is a threat ON CAMPUS or directly outside campus:

1. Report concern to the office.

2. Office to announce, “LOCKDOWN.”

3. Administration to call 911.

4. Students and staff move quickly inside the building.

5. If staff immediately perceive danger, the staff take the children to the safest location. This could be off campus (The two off campus SAFE locations are Holly Avenue School and Arcadia High School.)

6. Staff quickly grab students from the hall and place them in the closest room.

7. All doors and windows closed, locked, and covered.

8. Staff and students turn off all lights and hide.

9. All community members stay silent.

10. Students in restrooms hide on top of toilets with stalls.

11. NO movement outside of the classrooms occurs.

12. LOCKDOWN is lifted when the local police and/or administration unlock the classroom doors.

Shelter in Place

In the event there is a danger within the local community (not on campus) or a wild animal on school grounds:

1. Report concern to the office.

2. Administration to communicate with local police.

3. Office to announce, “shelter in place.”

4. Students and staff to move all activities inside the building.

5. All doors and windows closed, locked, and covered.

6. Students and staff conduct business as usual in the classrooms.

7. Minimal movement outside of the classrooms occurs.

8. Office to announce “shelter in place has ended” when perceived danger has ended.

9. Administration to communicate with local police.
