Section 2-09 – School Website, Social Media
The school must own and control all Internet presence including all social media. Individuals or groups may not personally launch anything that can be regarded as owned, sponsored, endorsed, or supported by the parish, school, or any related or affiliated ministry. Individuals or groups may not host any school website on their own domain or with a web hosting service that does not have a contract with the school itself. Those who violate this section will be asked to shut down his/her site or turn it over to the school. Failure to comply may result in removal of the student from school.
Digital Citizenship, Social Media, and Responsible AI Use
Students represent Bishop Alemany High School both on and off campus, including in digital environments. Students are expected to demonstrate respect, integrity and Christian values in all electronic communications. Students may not:
- Harass, intimidate, threaten or bully others through electronic means;
- Create anonymous accounts intended to target members of the school community;
- Post content that substantially disrupts the educational environment;
- Share confidential school information;
- Use social media to organize misconduct;
- Create accounts falsely representing the school.
Off-campus online conduct may be subject to disciplinary action when it impacts the safety, welfare, educational experience, or reputation of the Bishop Alemany community.
Student Academic Integrity and AI Use Policy
Purpose and Philosophy
At Bishop Alemany High School, we seek to educate the whole person in accordance with our Catholic values, fostering growth in both intellect and character. While artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful technological innovation, by passing the educational process by using AI to generate your coursework defrauds students of genuine intellectual growth and undermines the values of our community. With these advancements in technology, Bishop Alemany is committed to providing clear, relevant, and practical guidelines to help students utilize them with intention and integrity. These guidelines were informed by the Bishop Alemany High School AI Committee, who will continue to update and review the policy as needed.
Guidelines for Students
- Definition of AI Academic Dishonesty: Presenting text, code, images, structure, or ideas generated by AI as your own original work is considered a form of plagiarism. Fabricating data or citations using AI is strictly prohibited.
- Institutional Verification: To ensure fairness and maintain the sanctity of our academic environment, Bishop Alemany High School utilizes Turnitin integration to analyze student submissions for both plagiarism and the use of generative AI. This technology serves as a support for our faculty, helping to verify that the work submitted is the original, authentic effort of the student.
- The Default Rule is Prohibited Use: Students are strictly prohibited from using generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, specialized writing assistants, or image generators) for any step of a graded assignment, paper, project, or assessment unless the teacher has given explicit, upfront permission.
- Mandatory Disclosure and Citation: If a teacher explicitly authorizes the use of AI for an assignment (i.e., for brainstorming, editing, or data analysis), the student must completely and transparently disclose its use. All AI-assisted content must be cited accurately following standard style guidelines (i.e., MLA formatting).
- Teacher Discretion: AI is a context-dependent tool. What is permitted in one class or assignment may be strictly forbidden in another. It is the student's responsibility to verify the specific guidelines for every assignment before utilizing any digital aids. AI use will always be aligned with Bishop Alemany's AI Policy.
Enforcement and Progressive ConsequencesViolations of this policy will be systematically tracked by teachers, Deans, and may include Counselors and Administration. Consequence progression is cumulative across all classes:
- First Offense: The student will receive a zero on the assignment and will be placed on probation with two (2) detentions. The teacher will document the infraction, notify the Deans, and contact the parent/guardian. The student may be required to complete an alternate, non-AI assignment or written reflection for a maximum of partial credit.
- Second Offense: The student will receive an automatic zero on the assignment with no opportunity for a redo. The student will be placed on strict probation with four (4) detentions. A mandatory conference will be held with the student, parent/gardian, counselor, and a Dean.
- Third Offense: The matter will be referred to the Discipline Board for disciplinary action, which may include an academic contract, loss of school-sponsored letters of recommendation, exclusion from graduation or academic honors (such as Valedictorian status), suspension, or review for dismissal from the school.
Students are encouraged to keep track of their drafts and works-in-progress to support the authorship of their work.
