Promotion/Retention
Ordinarily, students who satisfactorily complete the prescribed grade level curriculum are promoted to the next highest grade at the end of the school year. Exceptions are made at the discretion of the principal. The decision to promote or accelerate a student to the next grade or to retain him/her in the present grade is based upon a consideration of the overall welfare of the student. The decision will be made in consultation with parents and by carefully weighing academic, emotional, and social factors. But, at the end of the year, if a student has an average grade of “F" in Language Arts or Mathematics, the student may be retained and required to repeat the grade. The principal, in consultation with the parents/guardians and faculty, shall make the final decision regarding retention.
Probation
A school may decide to place an enrolled student on probation as an academic or disciplinary matter. The probationary status of the student and the terms of the probation must be clearly documented in writing and signed by the parents/guardians.
Academic probation may include a formal contract or plan to allow the child time to improve their performance, engagement in order to demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding of subjects and concepts. If the student's academic performance does not improve while on probation, the outcome may be suspension and/or expulsion or withdrawal.
Disciplinary probation occurs when the student's behavior has reached a point where a more serious response from the school is required. If the student's behavior does not improve while on probation, the disciplinary process may lead to suspension and/or expulsion or withdrawal.
If a school decides to place a student on disciplinary probation, it must insure that the seriousness of this status is communicated to the student's parents/guardians. Due to the great variety of student offenses that can result in disciplinary probation, a school has many options in determining the extent of a student's probation (limiting activities, no athletics, community service, etc.).
Transfer
Whenever a pupil transfers to or from another school, a copy of the Cumulative Student Report and the original Health Record shall be transferred by the former school. Parents must authorize the release of the records to Our Lady of the Assumption. The original Cumulative Student Report will remain at the school. A record of the transfer, the reason for the transfer, and the name of the school to which the student is transferring or entering after graduation should be entered on the original copy of the Cumulative Student Report and the date of transfer is indicated in the Student Attendance Register.
Official transcripts are not given to students or parents. The school grants full credit for all work a student accomplishes up to the time of transfer.
Our Lady of the Assumption School reserves the right to determine a charge for parents for copies of records when multiple copies are requested.
Recommended Student Transfer Because of Parent/Guardian Attitude or Behavior
Under normal circumstances, a student should not be deprived of a Catholic education because of the attitudes or behavior of parents/guardians; however, uncooperative or disruptive parents/guardians might so diminish the effectiveness of the educational process that it may be impossible for the student to continue in the school. Before a student is asked to withdraw because of the attitudes or behavior of parents/guardians, the person in charge shall meet with the parents/guardians to notify them of the inappropriate attitudes or behavior and provide them with the opportunity for change. A meeting is not necessary if the conduct consists of physical violence or a credible threat of violence at the school.
Before the parents/guardians are asked to withdraw their child(ren), the person in charge shall first obtain the approval of the pastor (in the case of parish schools) and the regional superintendent. The regulations governing recommended transfer would then be applicable. See
Transfer of Records.
