The purpose of the OLA Student Council is to direct the activities of the student body and to uphold and promote the further benefits of the school. The following is an extract of the OLA Student Council Handbook.  The complete handbook is available annually from the Student Council Moderator and at the school office in May each year.:

ELECTION of STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS and COMMISSIONERS

Section I

The Student Council officers for the ensuing year will be elected in a general election to be held in May of the current school year.

Section II

Candidates for the officers will apply on forms provided by the Student Council Moderator, and comply with the rules listed on these forms.

Section III: Speeches:

Speeches are to be no more than 2 minutes long (will be timed), and must be approved in advance by administration (specific date on form). Candidates may not put down another candidate and cannot promise anything beyond their power abilities. Candidates and campaign managers must wear full dress uniforms and are allowed to use props but not costumes. At the bottom of their speech, list the names of the 'helpers' who will be assisting you at the election (no more than 5).

Section IV

A candidate with the simple majority of votes cast for an office will be declared elected. An unopposed candidate must obtain 51% of the votes in order to obtain the position.  If there is a tie, the candidates will be invited to serve as co- electees and to share the duties of that position, or may choose not to serve.

Section V

Elected candidates will take office the last week in May.

Section VI

All candidates who are running for President must have at least a year of experience as a class representative or student council member (or have attended the TACSC Conference) in order to have a better understanding of their duties.

Winners are first announced to all candidates before being announced to the school, on the day after the election.  At the discretion of the principal, if a position is not filled in the annual election, a second election may be held for this position at the start of the new school year, using the same format as posted above.  Otherwise, the position remains vacant until the next annual election.
