Participation in Student Council develops leadership, a sense of responsibility and good citizenship. The Student Council consists of 7th and 8th Graders elected by the student body to serve one academic school year as officers and commissioners.
The goals of student government are to:
- Develop the student’s understanding of the philosophy, goals and objectives of the school.
- Encourage the students to become active members of the school community by accepting the various opportunities for the personal interaction with peers, staff and parents
- Organize social and fundraising activities
All Student Council Officers must have and maintain a “B” grade average, no grade lower than a “C” and must maintain a Satisfactory or better in Participation and Conduct. Student Council Commissioners and Representatives must have and maintain a “C” average with no grade lower than a “C -” and must maintain a Satisfactory or better in Participation and Conduct. Class Representatives are elected to serve one academic year by each class and consist of two students for 2nd - 8th Grades. If a student does not maintain these grades in a trimester, they will become ineligible to serve on Student Council. Failure to attend all Student Council meetings and functions may result in being ineligible for Student Council for the remainder of the year.
The OLA Student cabinet will consist of the following 7th and 8th graders, who serve for one year, to direct the activities of the student body and to uphold and promote the further benefits of the school, and will have the following particular responsibilities.
- To consider and resolve any problems presented by Student Congress which would affect the entire student body.
- To execute, with the cooperation of the administration, any legislation initiated by the Cabinet or Student Congress.
- The power to veto any legislation by the Student Congress by two-thirds majority vote.
Four elected officers are: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. All Student Council Officers are expected to carry out the duties of the best of his/her abilities under the direction of the moderator and principal. At all times these elected officers represent the Student Body of Our Lady of the Assumption School and Parish Community.
Six elected commissioners are: Religious Affairs Commissioner, Safety and Ecology Commissioner, Athletics Commissioner, Publicity Commissioner, Music and Fine Arts Commissioner, and School Spirit Commissioner. All Student Council commissioners are expected to carry out the duties to the best of his/her abilities under the direction of the moderator and principal. At all times these elected commissioners represent the student body of Our Lady of the Assumption School and Parish Community.
President: To preside at all Student Council meetings, to supervise all Student Council activities, to represent Our Lady of the Assumption School at any student body activities with other schools, to coordinate and schedule the student council activity calendar including meetings to appoint any necessary committee chairpersons.
Vice President: To assist the president in any and all ways possible, to assume the responsibilities of the president when he/she is unable to carry out these duties, to plan assemblies and whole school events with the president, moderator, and principal, to oversee all elections.
Treasurer: To take the charge of all student council finances, to keep accurate and current records of the student council fundraising, to report current records at each Student Council meeting, to count and deposit all money at the school office, to make sure all memory is
used in accordance with the school policies and Student Council regulations (constitution).
Secretary: To keep an accurate record of the minutes of al1 Student Council meetings, to keep the student body informed, at each meeting, of all upcoming school events, to circulate and prepare the agenda (with president and vice president) for all Student Council meetings, to record the attendance of each meeting, to be responsible for all correspondence, to present to the principal, for her/his approval any legislation enacted by the Student Council.
Religions Affairs Commissioner: To be knowledgeable and aware of all religious events through both the school year and liturgical year, to lead daily morning prayers and flag salute, to plan for and lead prayer at all Student Council meetings at whole school events (pep rallies), to plan, organize, and set up all school masses and religious events (reconciliation, pep rallies, etc.).
Safety and Ecology Commissioner: To develop a program of school safety and ecology programs (recycling, trash disposal, no food waste, paper, etc.), to be familiar with all safety drills and to report to the student body of new safety information , and to act as chair of an annual “campus cleanup campaign”.
Athletics Commissioner: To maintain a sports activities schedule and records, to keep the student body and Student Council informed of all sports events, including posters, flyers, and morning announcements, to encourage all sport teams and players, to liaise with the Athletic Director and coaches for all sport activities especially Sports-a-Rama and Jog-A-Thon, to attend and help plan the sports awards and help to plan the sports award ceremonies, and to lead school sport rallies.
Publicity Commissioner: To publicize all school and Student Council events, with flyers, posters, and announcements, and to communicate upcoming school events to the parish.
School Spirit Commissioner: To set up and lead all school sport and spirit rallies, to promote school pride, to be an enthusiastic supporter of the school and its policies, and to organize activities to build school pride and develop community relationships.
Music and Fine Arts Commissioner: To assist the music director before sports, and spirit rallies, to work with the music minister during all school Masses and to assist with school productions - including the Talent Show.
The OLA Student Congress will consist of the following:
Two elected representatives from grades 2nd to 8th, one boy and one girl, from each homeroom. The Vice-President of the Student Council will act as a presiding officer.
The Student Congress will have the following responsibilities:
- To propose the legislation of the Student Council Cabinet.
- To advise the Student Council of and seek a solution for any problems which would affect the entire student body.
- To enforce, in their respective homerooms, with the cooperation of their teachers, any legislation enacted by the Student Council.
