It is our belief that appropriate uniform dress fosters a sense of belonging and pride, a safer and more respectful learning and teaching environment, and a confident and positive sense of self and respect for the dignity and welfare of others.

Students are expected to wear school uniforms, which are clean and reflective of pride in themselves and their membership in St. Martin of Tours School. Ripped, torn, and/or frayed clothing must be mended or replaced. Inappropriately dressed students or students who are not wearing the correct uniform will be issued a uniform violation.  Three uniform violations will result in a detention.   In some cases, students may also be sent to the office to call a parent or guardian to bring appropriate clothing or to take the student home to change.  All class work missed due to uniform violations/offenses will be made up at the discretion of the teacher.  If a student frequently offends against the uniform standards of dress, grooming, or hygiene and has been corrected in this regard, the cooperation of parents shall be sought to correct the problem.  Lack of improvement in personal appearance is grounds for the suspension of a student during that school day.  The principal reserves the right to make the final decision. Remember, dress code compliance begins at home.

Students are expected at all times to be neat and well groomed.  Hair is to be of appropriate length and natural color.  Boys' hair should not reach the collar of the school shirt or jacket and should not fall below the ear.  No extreme hairstyles are permitted e.g. cut outs or designs, bushy or shaggy hairstyles, boys' bangs so long they hang in eyebrows or cover eyebrows when pushed forward. No make-up, nail polish, tattoos, or jewelry other than a small religious medallion or cross, one pair of stud earrings - one earring in each ear lobe (girls only), and wristwatches are allowed at any time.  Network and/or Bluetooth-enabled digital "smart" watches are prohibited.  Choker necklaces are not permitted.  Clothing must be appropriately sized, i.e., no tight fitting, sagging or baggy pants.  Oversized clothing is not permitted.  Students must wear their pants and shorts to their waists.  Students may NOT wear bandanas, hoods, or other hair coverings.  Students may wear only white undergarments (no logos or colored t-shirts) beneath shirts. Undergarments may not extend beyond the sleeves (no long johns) nor beyond the collar (no turtle necks) of the uniform shirt.  Undergarments may not be visible.

OUT OF UNIFORM DAYS

On certain school days students are allowed the privilege of being out of uniform.  There is, however, a dress code even on out of uniform days.  Out of uniform clothing must be neat and modest.  Parents are responsible to ensure that students are dressed in a manner suitable for a Catholic school student.

 CLOTHING NOT PERMITTED:

  • Swimwear or extreme or inappropriate clothing
  • Clothing with inappropriate slogans or images
  • Cut outs, ripped or torn clothing that exposes the body
  • Strapless, backless, spaghetti strap or tank tops; tops must cover the midriff

On out of uniform days students may wear t-shirts, leggings, yoga pants, sweats, jeans, skirts or dresses. Shorts, skirts, and dresses must extend to the end of the student's fingertips with arms extended straight down.

Students who violate the dress code will be issued a uniform violation and will be required to contact their parent/guardian to bring their school uniform to school.  Violations of uniform policy may also result in the loss of the privilege to be out of uniform.

Parents and students are expected to cooperate with the uniform code.  If there is disagreement about acceptable appearance at school, the principal will make the final decision.  Issues relating to dress or appearance of a student that are not specifically mentioned in the parent/student handbook, but are inconsistent with the school's regulations, may be deemed unacceptable at the discretion of the principal.

Uniform Violations

Three uniform violations will result in a detention.  Inappropriately dressed students may also be sent to the office and a parent/guardian will be called to pick up the student and help them reach uniform compliance.  All class work missed due to uniform violations/offenses will be made up at the discretion of the teacher. If a student frequently offends against the uniform standards of dress, grooming, or hygiene and has been corrected in this regard, the cooperation of parents shall be sought to correct the problem.  Lack of improvement in personal appearance is grounds for the suspension / expulsion of a student.  The principal reserves the right to make the final decision.
