6.6.1 Archdiocesan Insurance Programs

The archdiocese has organized corporate entities to coordinate risk management activities and to provide and coordinate insurance programs for the archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Catholic Center oversees the insurance programs for all locations as well as directs employee health insurance and workers' compensation insurance.

A centralized approach is taken for liability, property and casualty, fire, earthquake, and similar risks to ensure that proper coverage is maintained for each location and to provide favorable rates throughout the archdiocese. The archdiocese allocates premiums to each location for liability and related coverage based on costs incurred and actuarial calculations according to industry standards for the various risks that require insurance. Active participation in loss prevention, regular facilities maintenance, and safety programs are the key to minimizing claims and limiting insurance premiums.

The archdiocese's property and casualty insurance program consists of the following coverages:

  • Property (fire, earthquake, vandalism, boiler and machinery, etc.) - Covers real and personal property owned by an archdiocesan entity. Interruption of operations coverage is included. Locations are responsible for a $2,500 deductible per occurrence for any property damage.

  • Liability - Provides coverage for bodily injury, property damage, auto liability, personal injury, and diocesan error and omissions (including directors and officers and employment-related practices for clergy, employees, and designated volunteers).

  • Automobile - Provides comprehensive and collision coverage for vehicles owned by the archdiocese. See also Retirement Process and Benefits for retired priests.

  • Workers' Compensation and Employers' Liability - Covers employees of the archdiocese for work-related injuries.

  • Employment Practices Liability Insurance - Covers employees against claims for employment-related conduct that, if unlawful, the employee does not know to be unlawful

  • Directors' and Officers' Coverage - Covers directors and officers against claims for conduct that is recognized as within the scope of their duties

  • Crime Insurance - Provides limited coverage for employee theft, theft of money and securities, forgery, computer fraud, and funds transfer fraud.

  • Fiduciary Liability - Protects archdiocesan trustees and other fiduciaries of archdiocesan activities.

  • Fine Arts - Protects items identified by a location according to its inventory. Purchase of this coverage is optional but encouraged; items of significant value are not covered if this insurance is not purchased.
