Absences with Acceptable Excuse

When a student has been absent, a written excuse signed by the parent or guardian is required, and the excuses are kept on file for a period of one year. An acceptable excuse includes illness, attendance at medical or dental appointments, funeral services for family members, quarantine as directed by County or City Officials or emergency or special circumstances as determined by the school authorities. Please see Extended Absences (4-04-02) and Truancy (4-04-6).

Returning to School Following an Absence

A written note, signed and dated by a parent or guardian, must accompany the student’s return to school and be presented to the homeroom teacher. The note must specify the dates of absence and the reason for the absence.  In case of communicable diseases (chicken pox, pink eye, strep, etc.), a doctor’s notification of the student’s readiness to return to school must be included with the parent’s note (State of CA Education Code). If the student has been diagnosed with a contagious disease (COVID, RSV, flu, lice, etc.), parents must notify the school office so that the school can take precautions and send notification home to the other families. Any student who leaves campus for a medical or dental appointment and re-enters school the same day must be signed out and back in at the school office by a parent or guardian. The student will receive an admittance slip which he/she will present to the teacher. The school assumes no liability in cases where students leave the premises in violation of the stated policy.
