ACADEMIC PROBATION/NOT MEETING GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS
SPBS believes in the principle of academic excellence, and as such is committed to the concept that this is best achieved through collaboration among the student, the school, and the home. In an effort to meet the academic needs of our diverse student population and maximize each student's potential for success, any student who receives the following grades (or their equivalent) on any report card, and/or Academic Evaluation, and/or who is unable to consistently maintain expected grade level standards in Behavior/Work Habits, will be placed on “Academic Probation" (Grades 4-8) or “Not Meeting Grade Level Standards" (Grades K-3):
- 1 “F" or 2 “Ds" (I)
- NI in Work Habits or Behavior (I)
The following protocol will be implemented by SPBS, if a student is placed on Academic Probation/Not Meeting Standards more than one time during the same school year:
1st Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards:
The Homeroom Teacher will discuss an individualized Action Plan generated by the student's teachers and/or the administration. This Action Plan is designed to list recommendations for improvement in the affected area while providing assistance in helping to maintain all subject areas. Failure in adhering to the action plan may result in athletic ineligibility for SPBS sports teams.
2nd Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards:
A Parent-Teacher Conference, in conjunction with SPBS Administration, will review the student's progress in implementing the recommendations outlined in the Action Plan. Revisions may be made to the Action Plan, as well as additional requirements may be added. At this point, the student will remain at St. Paschal Baylon School on a Conditional Basis, pending consistent improvement during the 3rd Trimester.
3rd Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards:
A Parent-Teacher Conference, in conjunction with the Principal and Vice-Principal, will be held after 3rdTrimester Academic Evaluations, in order to again review the student's progress and ascertain if the student has made sufficient progress to meet the standards for their current grade level.
In addition, the following may be implemented by SPBS during the grading period a student is on Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards, at the discretion of the administration:
- Written notification of Academic Probation will be provided by the school to the student's parents, at the end of the specific Trimester/Academic Evaluation period.
- An Action Plan may be generated by the student's teacher(s) outlining recommendations for improvement to better meet the individual needs of the student.
- The student may be declared athletically ineligible for SPBS sports teams.
- Additional Parent/Teacher Conferences may be requested by SPBS.
- Outside professional support services may be required by SPBS.
- Outside professional tutoring may be required by SPBS.
- Outside professional testing may be required by SPBS.
Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards: may cause the student's status at SPBS to be placed in jeopardy, unless sufficient and consistent academic; work habits; and/or behavioral progress is evidenced by the student, as well as requested outside professional support is provided by the parents as needed, and collaboration between home and school is evidenced.
A diploma will be issued to those eighth grade students who have satisfactorily completed the course of studies for students attending Saint Paschal Baylon School, as prescribed by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Saint Paschal Baylon School. A student must receive a 'D' or higher average in all academic subjects to receive a diploma. The principal reserves the right to refuse the awarding of a diploma for reasons involving poor academic achievement or conduct.
A student in Grades K-7 who meets the criteria for Academic Probation/Not Meeting Grade Level Standards, at the end of the Third Trimester may need to fulfill specific requirements during the summer as outlined by the school, in order to be promoted to the next grade level at SPBS, and/or may be promoted “conditionally".
Note: The process outlined above may be implemented/modified at the discretion of the SPBS administration at any point in the process.
