Daily attendance is required. Parents/guardians must ensure attendance.

Truant: Absent 3 full days without a valid excuse in one school year, or tardy/absent more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse on 3 occasions in one school year, or any combination of these. Schools must report truancy to the attendance supervisor/administrator.

Subsequent truancy: After the first report, any further unexcused absence or tardy must be reported again.

Habitual truant: Reported as truant 3 or more times in a year and the school has made a conscientious effort to hold at least one conference with the parent/guardian and the student.

Chronic truant: Absent without a valid excuse for 10% or more of school days in the current year (after required notices).

Note on tardies: For state truancy calculations, only unexcused tardies of 30+ minutes count toward the truancy threshold. Shorter tardies remain violations of school expectations and may result in school consequences but do not trigger state truancy status.

School Actions & Notifications

  • Initial Truancy Notice: When a student is first classified as truant, the school will notify parents/guardians using a cost-effective method (e.g., email/phone) with required information.

  • If truancy continues: The school will schedule a conference. Persistent issues may lead to referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) or a truancy mediation program, consistent with law.
