Toxic Substances in the Classroom
A safe learning environment is an essential part of any art studio or science lab from kindergarten through 12th grade. Each school should identify and understand potential risks and hazards associated with handling caustic materials, chemicals, minerals, solvents, paints, plants, and organic and biological substances in academic programs. Each school should pay special attention to class size,
personal protection equipment, and the
handling of hazardous wastes.
Arts and crafts supplies that contain toxic substances or are potential human carcinogens pose a significant danger to the health and safety of children. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment lists
prohibited supplies.
