​​​​5.11.8 Elementary School Teacher Educational Requirements and Placement

​​To be employed as a teacher, an applicant must possess at least a BA or BS degree and ideally have a teaching credential.  Applicants without a teaching credential must enroll in a California credential program to be completed within five years. Teachers with a credential from a state other than California must pass the CBEST and other professional tests, and must apply for a California credential and receive the credential within five years. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a state-approved agency to deter​​​mine if the applicant has the equivalent of a B​A or BS degree.​  A teacher's placement on the Department of Catholic Schools salary pay scale is determined by the educational qualification.
