Academic Dismissal or Recommended Transfer

Schools must clearly define their academic dismissal procedures. At the end of each course, students receive a final grade for that course which is recorded on the student's transcript.

Schools may dismiss students who do not make up course failures in summer school (see high school section on Summer School) or if a student receives a specified number of course failures at the end of a semester or school year. These conditions must be clearly stated in the parent/student handbook.

Any school that maintains these types of regulations must provide parents/guardians with sufficient notice prior to the student's failure. The principal or other administrator shall ensure that students do not fail courses unless the failure is justly deserved and parents/guardians have been previously notified.

Parents/guardians may use the Complaint Review Process to appeal academic dismissal or transfer.
